SAPULPA, CRANDALL NEXT FOR SMRS MIDGETS;
COONS, BACON, CLAUSON SCOOP UP SMRS WINS

       Brad Loyet is the new leader in the USAC/SMRS Great Plains Midget Series, following a flurry of activity in the central United States during the past 10 days.

       The series will resume August 20 and 21 with events at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla. and RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas.

       Loyet’s second-place in a race at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb. Tuesday helped boost him to the top of the standings where he now enjoys a 140-point cushion over former point leader Matt Sherrell.

       Jerry Coons Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. led all 30 laps to win Monday night’s USAC/SMRS Great Plains Midget race at Butler County Motorplex in Rising City, Neb. Driving the Wilke-Pak Motorsports Speedway Motors/TRD Spike/Toyota, Coons was trailed by Bryan Clauson, Brad Kuhn, Brady Bacon and Dave Darland. Sherrell finished 20th.

       Brady Bacon of Broken Arrow, Okla. caught Loyet near the finish of Tuesday night’s “Cornhusker Midget Challenge” 25-lap feature and won the USAC/SMRS Great Plains race at Junction Motor Speedway. Driving his Tel-Star Communications Triple X/Esslinger Ford, Bacon beat Loyet, Kuhn, Josh Wise and Coons to the checkered flag.

       Kuhn, of Avon, Ind. captured Wednesday night’s 40-lap race at Junction Motor Speedway, leading the final 23 laps in his Rotondo Weirich Beast/Fontana. Bacon finished second ahead of Wise, Darland and Clauson. Bacon led the first 17 laps before yielding to Kuhn.

       Clauson, of Noblesville, Ind., led the final 18 laps to win Saturday night’s 40-lap Speedway Motors “Belleville Midget Nationals” finale at the Belleville High Banks, which also offered SMRS points. He trailed pole dash winner and pole starter Henry Clarke until Clarke’s engine expired on lap 23, then held off a determined bid by defending race winner Brad Sweet to put his All Star Performance/Bryan Clauson Racing Spike/Esslinger Ford in the winner’s circle. Sweet took second ahead of Kuhn, Darren Hagen and Wise.
